For all the talk of ‘revolutions’ and the Arab Spring, the situation in the Arab world could hardly be described as a time of growth and renewal. Turmoil, trauma, stasis, tension or economic collapse would be more accurate with catastrophe reserved for the situation in Syria. In Israel and Palestine, a new round of peace talks take place, but the possibility of a two state solution continues to recede, and life in the West Bank and Gaza strip just gets worse. In Egypt, revolution gave way to an Islamist-led government and now to a military coup and massacres. Are these growing pains or signs of a more serious malaise? Were the hopes of Arab spring always illusory or is more patience required?
